Pulpit

Church of Saint Mary the Virgin Holne

The pulpit is very unusual and dates from the same period as the rood screen. It is thought to have been carved from a single trunk.

The pulpit has ten decorative compartments displaying Armorial Bearings representing local individuals and institutions, including Buckfast Abbey, which may have given the land on which the church was built.

Small patches of red can be seen on the base of the pulpit. These are the restorer's test work, carried out to establish what a full restoration can achieve. The results are considered so successful that a full restoration is planned, for which the PULPIT CONSERVATION FUND has been established. To view a gallery of our conservation work click here.
