Charles kingsley window

Church of Saint Mary the Virgin Holne

The window in the North Transept is in memory of Charles Kingsley, who was born and baptised in Holne in 1819 while his father was curate here. He went on to be a well-known priest and novelist, famous for writing the Water Babies and Westward Ho!

He was also well known for his sometimes controversial views on major issues of his day relating to evolution, theology, social affairs and politics.

The window was the work of Meyer of Temple, London and was installed in 1894. A likeness of Kingsley is shown in the centre of the upper three main panels.
